Artist Statement

My art is about exploring the ambiguity in language. The difference between inside and outside. Where does one end and the other begin? Is there a difference? The same for day and night, good and evil or art and kitsch. I am attempting to visualize the nuances of meaning in these terms and others. Working hand-in-hand with this is my fascination with entropy. Knowing that the heat death of the universe is not far off I am compelled to observe all the little signs of the disorganization of a system. Cracks in cement, rusting bridges, earthquake damage, and tornados are all visual reminders that all things end.

The imagery comes from my above interest in language ambiguity and entropy but also has numerous influences. Most notable is the Hairy Who?. A group of Chicago artists including Jim Nutt, Karl Wirsum, Gladys Nilsson, and Ed Paschke. Their irreverent, witty approach to subject matter is an inspiration to me.”
